Story

Ganga Singh (Balraj Sahni) looks after the welfare of poor children, free school, hospital, village and has a very strong faith in God. In his spare time, he teaches the children to read and write, and he has his own group of three students, two girls and a boy, who are always in trouble with the local landlord (Mohan Choti). One day, the villagers decide to burn the landlord’s house as revenge for the brutal way he lives. Ganga Singh and a brave young man help the students and help clear the building. Unfortunately, the landlord is not home, but the chief minister (Mohan Choti) is and he sends police who come with shotguns, machine guns and riot guns. It is difficult for Ganga Singh and the students to drive back the police, but with the help of a horse and carriage, they succeed. The chief minister tells Ganga Singh that he wants to help the villagers get the land they have been in dispute over for so long. His best friend, Brahma, tells him that the evil landlord has a younger brother, Chhotu. He asks Ganga Singh to get Chhotu, the thief, married to one of the village girls. He has already been given a bride and the only thing to do is to get the marriage done so the village’s feud over land can be averted. Ganga Singh quickly gathers the money to arrange the wedding, but then finds that Chhotu has run away to Mumbai (then Bombay). Ganga Singh wants to go after him, but Brahma convinces him to hold off to a later date because of the imminent wedding. Ganga Singh brings the bride to the village, where people are surprised that the bride is actually pretty, but she is made to pretend that she is ugly because Chhotu is not home to approve of her. Ganga Singh warns everyone that Chhotu is dangerous and if anyone tries to help him, he will shoot them. Ganga Singh meets with Brahma and explains that Chhotu is holding the village’s children hostage, and plans to sell them in Pakistan. Ganga Singh and the angry villagers go after Chhot
