Cannot get pytest -m to run parallel tests

I am using pytest -m 0 -k -v…. The tests are for extracting parts of text out of documents using RegEx. I am running on macOS 10.12.6 with Python 3.6.5.
The tests run fine, but when I try pytest -m 0 -k -v 2 it takes forever to finish the tests – it seems like there are 3 or 4 tests running at the same time.
To troubleshoot this I added “elapsed = pytest.time.strftime(“%S”)” to the code that extracts the text and when I pytest -m 0 -k -v 2 it prints a line like:
1 elapsed = pytest.time.strftime(“%S”)

The number of seconds it takes to run the tests is equal to the number of tests it runs at the same time (3 or 4, depending on the number of tests I run). It’s been like that since pytest was released.
